Undergraduates are the heart of our clinic. They schedule patients for appointments, take vitals, scribe for health professional students and preceptors, act as interpreters, represent their committees, assist with blood draws, and help our patients access any other services they may need.

All undergraduates begin as intakers where they get to interact with patients each Saturday. After taking vitals, those who are qualified to interpret act as interpreters during each visit, while others act as scribes. This experience allows undergraduate students to truly get to know our patients and see what health professional students and preceptors do during a full visit.

After six Saturdays as an intaker, undergraduates can train to become lab staff or receptionists:

  1. Lab: Undergraduates enter lab orders, organize and label tubes, and assist phlebotomists with blood draws. They also assist in collecting other samples, such as pap smears, biopsies, and urine samples.
  2. Reception: Undergraduates schedule patients for appointments during the week, answer the clinic phone, organize the flow of Saturday clinic, and schedule patients for followup appointments.
  3.

About our committees

Each undergraduate volunteer joins a committee during their time at Clínica Tepati. In addition to their typical Saturday role, they are also responsible for completing committee duties both inside and outside of clinic. Undergraduates also spend one Saturday each quarter as their committee representative.

Medical Records & Technology (MRAT)

Undergraduates manage and update patient records, log demographic and population data of all patients seen, and maintain our clinic’s social media platforms (including this website!). Finally, MRAT publishes the annual report, which serves as a testament to Clínica’s achievements and progress throughout the year.

Referrals

Undergraduates work throughout the week, outside of clinic, to process referrals. Undergraduates fax documents to referral clinics, call patients to make appointments, and followup with referral institutions to ensure that patients are receiving the care that they need.

Publicity & Events Planning

This committee is responsible for planning all clinic fundraisers and socials, organizing the Annual Clínica Tepati Banquet, and leading the recruitment of new undergraduate students to the clinic.

Health Education

Members of this committee are trained to be Health Educators, and meet one-on-one with patients for Health Education appointments. During these appointments, health educators discuss diet, exercise, and overall lifestyle with patients, and set healthy goals for our patients to strive for to optimize their health or regulate their condition.

Mental Health

This committee aims to promote awareness, de-stigmatize, and educate the community on mental health. To foster a supportive and sensitive environment within the clinic, members are responsible for identifying, tracking, and treating patients with depression and other mental ailments by coordinating therapy appointments with our counselor and psychiatrist.

Pharmacy

Undergraduates in this committee are responsible for helping Tepati’s patients gain access to affordable medications and providing them with appropriate medical supplies. This includes tracking patient medication reimbursements, assisting with GoodRx coupons and other medication discounts, and utilizing the Dispensary of Hope program which provides eligible patients with free medications.

Specialty

This committee schedules and manages all specialty clinic days on Saturdays. The Committee manages all internal referrals, schedules patients, organizes followup care, and connects with new specialty preceptors. Additionally, the Specialty Committee ensures that the specialty clinic day has the correct supplies and items needed to serve the patients.

Case Management

This committee is responsible for bridging the gap in care for patients with complex needs. Case managers provide patients specific care that meets the patients needs by collaborating with professional students and maintaining regular contact for chronic disease management, coordination of social services, linkage to care, and multidisciplinary support.
